On August 19th, The world witnessed a rare blue supermoon, stargazers got amazing clicks of the Blue Moon on Monday. The moon appeared about a seventh bigger and brighter on Monday evening as a blue moon and supermoon coincided.
What is a supermoon?
The Moon moves around the Earth in an elliptical orbit or long circle. Every month, the Moon comes closer to the Earth (perigee) and also goes far from the Earth (apogee). When the Moon is at or near its closest point during a full Moon, it is called a “Supermoon.” Because the Moon’s orbit wobbles and changes relative to the Sun and Earth’s orbits, the distance between its closest and farthest points varies. However, the Moon appears 14% larger at perigee than at apogee.
What is a Blue Moon?
A Blue Moon is the term used when we see two full moons in one month. The lunar period is 29.5 days, which is slightly shorter than the average length of a calendar month. This difference causes the full moon to occur at the beginning of the month, leaving enough days for another cycle so that the second full moon occurs in the same month. So a full moon on the 1st or 2nd of each month will be followed by a second full moon on the 30th or 31st. This happens every two to three years.
People sometimes talk about two types of Blue Moons: monthly and seasonal. This Full Moon was a monthly Blue Moon. Seasonal Blue Moons occur when there are four full moons in a season (spring, summer, fall, and winter) instead of the normal three.
